VI.4 Examination of Microbial Films
Aim
To observe the structure of microbial communities forming surface films.
Specimen & Apparatus
- Surface film from standing water
- Pipette or dropper
- Slide and coverslip
- Compound microscope
Method
- Collect a small sample of the surface film using a pipette.
- Place a drop on a slide.
- Apply a coverslip carefully.
- Examine under low power to observe overall structure.
- Increase magnification to study finer detail.
Observations to Make
- Structure and consistency of the film.
- Presence of different types of organisms.
- Arrangement of material within the film.
- Any visible movement or activity.
