I.5 Observation of the Insect Cuticle
Aim
To study the structure of the insect cuticle and segmentation.
Specimen & Apparatus
- Insect part (e.g. beetle leg, ant, or small fly)
- Slide and coverslip
- Water or glycerine (optional)
- Compound microscope
Method
- Place the specimen or part on a slide.
- Add a drop of water or glycerine if required.
- Apply a coverslip carefully.
- Examine under low power to observe overall structure.
- Increase magnification to study surface detail.
Observations to Make
- Segmentation of the cuticle.
- Surface texture and patterning.
- Presence of joints or articulation points.
- Any fine structures such as hairs or spines.
