I.4 Examination of the Wing of an Insect
Aim
To observe the structure of an insect wing, including membrane and veins.
Specimen & Apparatus
- Insect wing (e.g. housefly, crane fly, or moth)
- Slide and coverslip
- Water (if required)
- Compound microscope
Method
- Remove a wing carefully from the specimen.
- Place the wing flat on a slide.
- Add a small drop of water if needed to improve contact.
- Apply a coverslip gently.
- Examine under low and then higher magnification.
Observations to Make
- Pattern and branching of veins.
- Transparency and texture of the membrane.
- Presence of hairs or scales.
- Variation in thickness across the wing.
