Malm

Category: geology

“Malm” describes a soft, pale, workable soil.

Field Description

Crumbly, light-coloured earth, often easily cultivated compared to harder chalk.

In White’s Landscape

Malm soils supported agriculture and formed gentler slopes between more resistant geological layers.

Notes

The contrast between malm and “rag” reflects practical land use as much as geology.
