The Amazing Hovering Robin!
An interesting observation of a robin doing something out of the ordinary
The Amazing Hovering Robin!
Every now and again, even the most familiar species can break the mould, step outside their usual pattern for a moment and give you a surprise.
This morning, I noticed that our garden security camera had triggered and when I reviewed what had caused it I saw a European robin near one edge of the frame, something apparently in its beak - likely food. For a second or two, it paused in mid-air, wings beating rapidly, before diving back into the garden and continuing on its way.
It is a small detail, and the clip itself is brief, but it stood out. Robins are not birds I associate with hovering! It seems to be taking a moment to assess where to go next, hesitating between decisions. Clearly, it’s not hovering in the way a kestrel does, but what makes it interesting is not that it’s rare or dramatic, but that it was completely unexpected. After years of watching robins, this was something I hadn’t noticed before.
A reminder, perhaps, that even the most well-known species retain small behaviours that reveal themselves only briefly - and often by chance.
